Welcome to Darien United

DARIEN UNITED is a grassroots initiative made up of Darien residents and local leaders who commit to creating and supporting a welcoming community that respects and encourages contributions of all people, in all our beautiful variety of race, ethnicity, ancestry, national origin, class, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, language, mental and physical ability, military status and immigration status.

Darien United is about celebrating differences, respecting members of our community and beyond for the things we have in common and for our differences. We believe we are all responsible for making our community as welcoming and inclusive as it can be, by encouraging respectful discussion and cooperation among all individuals and groups in our community, and committing to treating neighbors, employees, customers, and visitors with respect and dignity.

We will work tirelessly to educate ourselves on issues of diversity and inclusion and come together as a community to share our cultures, experiences, and perspectives through education, art, food, and more.

We commit to upholding these values within our town, organizations and businesses, as both aspirational and operational guideposts in our everyday practices and priorities.

THE PLEDGE*

I realize that no one in Darien is exactly like me—and that’s a wonderful thing.

I respect my neighbors for the things we have in common and for our differences.

I resolve that we are all responsible for making our community as welcoming and inclusive as it can be.

I pledge to treat neighbors, employees, customers, and visitors with respect and dignity.

I pledge to educate myself on issues of diversity and inclusion in order to mitigate bias and eradicate hate and intolerance.

I pledge to encourage respectful discussion and cooperation among all individuals and groups in our community.

I pledge to work on behalf of all residents, employees, and visitors to ensure that Darien is a place where people from all walks of life can live, work, or visit with equitable access to opportunities, programs, and resources regardless of race, ethnicity, ancestry, national origin, class, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, language, mental and physical ability, military status, or immigration status.

I join DARIEN UNITED in committing to upholding these values within our town, organizations and businesses as both aspirational and operational guideposts in my everyday practices and priorities.

I take this pledge fully aware that the struggle to eliminate prejudice, hatred, and intolerance will not end with a mere pledge, but calls for an ongoing transformation within myself and the institutions and structures of our society.
