SUMMARY:Week Without Violence: Luminary Night
DESCRIPTION:Luminary Night is a community vigil held at the end of our Week Without Violence to honor victims of violence and to show support for survivors.  Community members purchase kits from the YWCA and on Sunday evening\, October 22nd\,  they light them outside their homes at dusk. Often neighborhoods coordinate to light their block together and gather as a community. \n  \nYou can purchase your Luminary Kits here or at Palmers Market in Darien.\nThose who purchase luminary kits online can pick them up at the YWCA. We encourage neighborhoods to designate “block captains” to coordinate purchase and pickup for their neighborhoods. \n  \nFor each luminary kit sold\, the YWCA will donate an item to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC). Our Youth Empowerment Committee will use the items to make Welcome Baskets for DVCC clients moving into new housing.

In addition\, 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. \nThe YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s Week Without Violence is an annual campaign held in the third week of October to raise awareness of and promote action to end violence against women\, young women\, and girls.
